Mountain Navigation and Night Nav

Scarr and Kanturk Mountains located right behind Lough Dan scout centre are ideal locations to practice mountain navigation and night nav. Both mountains get there name from topographic feartures as Scarr means “sharp ridge” and Kanturk “the head of the hog” probabley refers to the numerous bumps on the summit which resemble the crumpled nature of a pigs snout. Access onto the hill is quick and easy directly from the main gate to the centre and there are numerous features both large scale for beginners such as spot heights, forest corners, summits and cols as well as more suttle changes in slope, re-enterants, and contour details for more experienced hill walkers. The area is covered by a variety of maps including the OS 1:50,000 sheet 56, Harvey’s 1:30,000 map of the Wicklow Mountains as well as orienteering maps.

If you are organising a training session we have an indoor meeting/lecture room which you can use for your theory sessions. We can also lend you some laminated maps.
